INTERACT MISSION STATEMENT

Through contemporary and traditional performing arts of the Asian Pacific Rim, Asian Culture Exchange focuses on cross-cultural interaction with the community to educate and increase the awareness of the Asian culture, to present positive role models and promote pride in one's heritage, to tell the stories of the Asian American community.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY

Since we focus on Asian themes, the Asian communities are an important segment of our audience base. The last census indicated that Asians make up 18% of the Sacramento population. There are over 70 ethnic Asians communities in California. We have worked with the Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Korean, Japanese and Pacific Islanders communities. We are currently working with the Hmong community on an original play about the "Mountain People." There are no existing theater spaces in the neighborhoods where these communities are concentrated.

The theater space we rent is located in an upper middle-class anglo neighborhood. We have strong neighborhood attendance which is reflected in our audiences being about 50% non-Asian. We constantly receive comments of their appreciation of our theater company and how educational our productions are.

Our school programs have been conducted in the Natomas School District, Sacramento City Unified School District, San Juan Unified School District, and at Sacramento City College.
